Built in 1869 and opened to the public in 1870, the museum of Payerne had different collections : animals, shells, insects and historical objects linked to the history of Payerne.
Among these objects you can find the famous "saddle of the queen Berthe", which in fact is a saddle of a bourgignonne competition.
In 1955, the museum had four halls. In 1958, after Albert Burmeister died, who had looked after its development during almost fifty years, closed its doors. In 1965, the hall of natural history had to be evacuated to free space for the college.
The museum organizes permanent expositions of Aimée Rapin (an artist without one arm) and the General Antoine-Henri Jomini (originated from Payerne, great tactician, military writer...)
