The sculpted capitals of Payerne’s abbey church truly are stand-alone works of art and some of the finest examples of Burgundian Romanesque art.
Capitals are distinct architectural elements, perched on the top of the columns that support the arches, which themselves support the structure of the building. They tend to feature all manner of small, intriguing and highly imaginative sculpted figures, often conveying a Biblical message from medieval times.
