The rose garden

La roseraie
Route de la Plage 50
1470 Estavayer-le-Lac

White or red, roses perfume an alleyway on the “route de la plage” and give it sparkling colours.

The city of Estavayer-le-Lac is often called the City of the Rose. In its medieval centre, visitors can admire this flower in street corners and along the walls. By the lake, on the “route de la plage”, rose lovers are amazed by the pergola-shaped rose garden. The latter was offered by the Société Romande des Amis des Roses in 1992. 31 rose trees climb along the wooden structure and decorate the hiking trail. It is worth the detour. Not only can the walker contemplate the rose garden, but there is also a breathtaking view of the Chenaux castle, which overlooks the city. In addition, the rose garden is located a few steps from the lake. Why not take the loop through the “Nouvelle Plage” (beach) to enjoy the lake setting?

Every year, at the beginning of summer, hundreds of roses colour the whole city. More than 4000 rose tree plants are scattered throughout the City of the Rose. It is therefore not surprising that this flower is the emblem of the city of Estavayer-le-Lac. The reason why is not very clear. We know that the first representations date back to 1502 and decorate the nave and keystones of the St. Laurent Church. Nowadays, a festival is dedicated to this flower. Every two years since 2013, the streets are transformed into a floral paradise with exhibitions, conferences and a market.

Access to the rose garden is free and open to all.

The flowering period of the rose goes from late spring to early summer.
