Spring of 2020 sees the abbey reopening after almost six years' work.
The programme will feature an official evening, a schools day, and numerous activities for families and visitors keen to see the abbey's new look. The Market Square's also receiving a facelift! It's being inaugurated with great pomp on Friday evening and will host the spring market's stands on Saturday.
The region's composers will take centre-stage, with ten or so of their works sung by children's choirs from all over French-speaking Switzerland.
As for the younger ones, they'll be given a chance to discover the abbey through a variety of workshops and educational visits.
The inaugural concert, "Clair de Nuit" will be a sensory experience for the audience, immersing it in a blend of Gregorian chanting and contemporary music. Particular attention will be paid to the scenography and lighting of the building.
The abbey, that great lady so dear to the hearts of the people of Payerne and a historical symbol of the entire region, will be smartly turned out and ready for her inauguration taking place from 14 to 17 May 2020!
Payerne abbey, the largest Romanesque place of worship in all of Switzerland, is the focus of an ambitious conservation, restoration and enhancement project. The work has facilitated the preservation of the thousand-year-old edifice. At the same time as these important conservation works involving the monument, the Market Square has been transformed into a paved pedestrian concourse in a bid to provide a fitting setting for the abbey. What's more, a new tour trail revealing the site's history is due to be launched. The abbey and museum are temporarily closed during the works. The inaugural celebration will take place over a weekend, from 14 to 17 May 2020.
