Along the Grande Cariçaie, between reed beds and alluvial forests
Estavayer-le-Lac - Chevroux - Portalban

On leaving Estavayer railway station, we head for the centre of town, the path passing between the cemetery and a branch of the UBS bank. At the Tour de la Trahison (Traitors’ Tower) we go down the steps leading to the bottom of the town. We continue rightwards, heading towards the hospital and passing beneath majestic Chenaux Castle. We continue straight on, following the waymarking. Arriving at La Corbière, we enter the Grande Cariçaie nature reserve. The walk benefits from the shade of the reserve’s alluvial forests. We’re accompanied by birdsong and the croaking of frogs. This section of path is closed during live military firing exercises: advance information may be obtained from the tourist office.
We can now opt to go up to Forel and follow the access tracks to Chevroux, so benefiting from wide-ranging views of the lake and Jura, or to carry straight on via the Grande Cariçaie. We take the former option. Arriving at Chevroux village, we go down, heading for the lower reaches of the village. We pass the two restaurants and continue our walk alongside the football pitch to find the educational trail with its informative interpretation panels explaining the Grande Cariçaie. We follow the waymarked path along the edge of the wood and turn left on the path leading to the lake-dwellers’ village. It’s worth taking time to discover this authentically reconstructed Neolithic village. We then have a choice of heading for the landing stage, established in line with the environmental criteria of the nature reserve, or, after the Neolithic village, continuing on to Portalban via the woodland path of the Grande Cariçaie. We are greeted by Portalban’s beach. We can return to Estavayer-le-Lac by boat during the summer season (consult the LNM timetables) or by bus to Domdidier followed by train.
