Skirting the Broye valley
Avenches - Oleyres - Payerne

Setting off from the station, we follow the waymarkings through the town and head towards Donatyre. The remains of the Roman theatre testify to the region’s rich heritage. We reach the village via the path in front of us, continuing along the road to find a waymarked path leading to Châtel wood and the Reine Berthe refuge. The views here of the Broye plain, Avenches and the Jura are breathtaking. After a brief rest, we head towards Oleyres on the same path. In the village, we leave the waymarked path and follow the road to Chandon. At the second bend, we take an earth path on our right and head for Grand Belmont wood along a waymarked route. Halfway along it (at altitude point 658), a vantage point with seating offers fabulous views of the Fribourg Alps. We carry straight on towards the heights above Russy, where we rejoin the waymarked trail and follow it to Corcelles-près-Payerne, passing Belmont Fruits’ market garden. The route then passes a chicken farm and crosses a stream before following access tracks to Merdasson stream, which we follow as far as the church of Notre Dame de Tours. We carry on above Corcelles-près-Payerne and follow the waymarking to Payerne. Once there, do make a point of viewing the 11th century priory, a Romanesque gem, and its surroundings before leaving for home.
