Cudrefin - La Sauge
From lake to birds - Walking to birdsong
Setting off from Cudrefin harbour, we take the path along the edge of the lake and head towards la Sauge. If we set off from the football pitch car park, we reach the road that goes to the campsite, which we cross to join the path with yellow waymarkings.
On the far side of the campsite, we continue straight on along our waymarked path until we reach la Sauge. We can pay a visit to the nature centre or follow the free trail. We then continue our ramble along the canal towards the lake. The area is famous for its wildlife, in particular the exceptional variety and quantity of its birdlife. The distance to the end of the canal is around 1 km. Coming back from the jetty, on our right we can take a “protected” path in the Grande Cariçaie.
We then have a number of options for returning to Cudrefin via various paths through the Grande Cariçaie. Take care because some might be underwater, depending on the season.
We then continue along the wide path and rejoin the footpath, which we follow by bearing right to Cudrefin; alternatively, we can take a little track on the right that’s regularly inundated. This latter path isn’t always easy to follow, but it’s official and worth the detour. After that, we return to a wider path and bear left and, once back on the waymarked path, we bear right and make our way back to Cudrefin.
